Built for British Columbia

Summerland metal roofing: a roof that cannot rust.

BC is a coastline, a rainforest, a snow belt and a fire zone, sometimes on the same drive. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

There is no iron in aluminum, so there is nothing to rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched. That is why it is the metal for oceanfront homes, island cabins and anywhere the wind carries salt.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel. On our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum itself does not ignite. Ask us to quote the assembly if your home backs onto forest or grassland.

Reflectance

Reflectance, rated colour by colour

Most Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), which publishes each colour's solar reflectance (0.25 to 0.44 when new) and thermal emittance (0.83 to 0.86). Lighter and metallic colours reflect more. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Energy

Colour and summer heat

Lighter colours absorb less summer sun than dark ones. What that saves depends on climate, colour, insulation and attic ventilation, so we don't quote a figure.

Solar

The roof to put solar on

A solar array lasts 25 to 30 years. Put it on an asphalt roof and the panels often have to come off and go back on when the roof wears out underneath them. On an Interlock roof they come off at the end of their own life, not the roof's. Standing Seam takes clamp mounts with no holes drilled; the other profiles use mounting hardware made for metal roofing. At roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre the roof leaves more of the structure's capacity for the array, and your solar installer confirms the framing.

Wind

Locked on four sides

Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides, with no exposed fastener for a storm to work at. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Coastline: Province of British Columbia, Coastal Marine Strategy ↗ gives "more than 26,000 kilometres"; federal mapping gives 25,725 km. Product figures are the manufacturer's: interlockroofing.com ↗

    Why aluminum roofing, for Summerland

Fire, sun and the odd heavy snow. What a Summerland roof has to handle.

    Wildfire

    After the August 2026 fire

The Bald Range wildfire led to the evacuation of the whole District in August 2026. Where a home backs onto grassland or forest, ask us to quote Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly; aluminum does not ignite. No roof is fireproof, and embers reach gutters and vents, so we go over the roof edges with you.

    Sun

Hot, dry summers on the benches

Summerland's Environment Canada station (1981–2010 normals) averages 336.7 mm of precipitation a year and a July high of 28.4 °C; the record is 44.7 °C. A roof here is worn by sun more than rain. Aluminum has nothing in it for heat to dry out, crack or curl.

    Snow

    Snow guards over the doors

The same station averages 54.0 cm of snow a year. On a metal roof, snow lets go in one slide instead of melting in place. We decide at the estimate where snow guards go, usually over entries, decks and the driveway.

    Old & new

A town older than its incorporation

Upper Trout Creek was settled in 1892 and Summerland was incorporated in 1906, so houses range from the oldest streets to new builds on the benches. Interlock® Slate and Interlock® Cedar Shingle suit an older house; Interlock® Standing Seam suits a modern one.

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

    Straight answers

Summerland aluminum shingles: your questions, answered.

    All of our answers ↗

    Which communities does summerlandroofing.com cover?

The District of Summerland: Lower Town, downtown (West Summerland), Trout Creek, Prairie Valley, Balcomo, Mineola and the rest of the benches. Peachland, Penticton, Naramata and the rest of the Okanagan and Shuswap are covered at okanaganroofing.com. One company does all of it, with the same crews and warranty.

Do you install aluminum shingles and metal shingles in Summerland?

Yes. We install Interlock® Slate, Interlock® Cedar Shingle, Interlock® Shake and Interlock® Mediterranean Tile, all interlocking aluminum shingles, plus Interlock® Standing Seam and solid copper. The roof slope must be at least 3/12. We remove the old roof first; we don't patch or install asphalt.

How does an aluminum roof handle wildfire risk in Summerland?

Aluminum does not ignite, and Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, is offered on these roofs. No roof is fireproof, and a roof is only one part of a house's exposure to embers. The District has offered free FireSmart Home Assessments to Summerland homeowners, which look at the whole property.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Summerland?

The District of Summerland issues building permits. Its building-permit page says permits are usually required for new building or renovation projects, and lists non-structural maintenance or minor repairs to the exterior of a home among work that doesn't need one. It does not mention re-roofing by name, so we confirm with the District for your address.

How much does a metal roof cost in Summerland?

Price ranges by profile, from our own BC contracts, are on our metal roof cost page. Treat them as a rough guide only: each roof's structure and other conditions move the price. A roof consultation, on Zoom or at your home, gives you an accurate written price.

What does "Summerland's Best Roof®" mean?

I.E.L. Manufacturing Ltd., which holds the Interlock trademarks, registered Best Roof® as a trademark. In Canada it is the name of the Interlock® roof. "Summerland's Best Roof®" is that same aluminum roof, installed in Summerland by Interlock Metal Roofing (BC) Ltd. The phrase names a product; it does not rank anyone.
